How to measure a room for paint

Measure walls, openings and ceilings without confusing floor area with wall area.

Measure the length of each wall and its painted height. For a rectangular room with a uniform height, measure length, width and height once: wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height.

Measure all four walls, then their heightTop view of a rectangular room with length 4 metres and width 3 metres. Its perimeter is 14 metres. A separate wall elevation has a height of 2.5 metres.Length: 4 mROOM PLAN2 × (4 + 3) = 14 mWidth: 3 mWALL2.5 mHeight: 2.5 m
Wall area is perimeter × height: 14 × 2.5 = 35 m² before openings. The floor is only 4 × 3 = 12 m².

A five-step measurement sheet

  1. Write the room name and the units at the top of your notes.
  2. Measure the room length and width along the walls.
  3. Measure from the top of the baseboard to the ceiling, or the actual upper paint line.
  4. Measure doors, windows and any other areas that will not receive this paint.
  5. Record the ceiling separately if it uses a different product or sheen.
Subtract the areas you will not paintA 4 metre by 2.5 metre wall contains a 0.9 by 2 metre door and a 1.2 by 1 metre window. Subtract 1.8 and 1.2 square metres from 10 square metres.Wall: 4 m × 2.5 m = 10 m²DOOR0.9 × 21.8 m²WINDOW1.2 × 11.2 m²10 − 1.8 − 1.2 = 7 m² to paint
Openings are deducted once. If the door itself needs paint, add its measured faces as a separate paint group.

Irregular rooms

Use one Individual wall entry per wall. Add alcoves as extra walls; do not treat an L-shaped room as one large rectangle. For a sloping or triangular section, calculate its area manually and enter Custom area. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2.

Split an irregular elevation into a rectangle and triangleA gabled elevation is a 6 by 3 metre rectangle beneath a triangle with a 6 metre base and 2 metre rise. Rectangle 18 plus triangle 6 equals 24 square metres before openings.Rise 2 m6 × 3 = 18 m²Rectangle height: 3 mBase: 6 mTriangle: 6 × 2 ÷ 2 = 6 m²
Enter 18 m² and 6 m² as custom surfaces in the same paint group, or enter their combined 24 m². Subtract openings only once.

Feet and inches

12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. You can instead select inches and enter 150. For metric measurements, 250 cm equals 2.5 m. The calculator converts existing dimensions when you switch units.

Common measurement error

A 12 × 10 ft floor is 120 sq ft, but its 8 ft high walls have 352 sq ft before openings. Using floor area would miss most of the surface.

A measurement worksheet

Copy these columns to paper for each surface. Keep dimensions and areas in one unit system throughout.

These are two separate example rooms, not conversions of the same room. Use Room mode for a rectangle or individual walls for uneven heights. Use the ceiling calculator for flat ceilings.
