How to estimate painting cost
Build a transparent budget from purchase quantities and local labor assumptions.
Editorial review: October 11, 2026 · AI-assisted initial content · Editorial transparency
Start with the paint and primer you need to buy, not just their theoretical consumption. Multiply rounded purchase quantities by your entered unit prices, then add supplies you still need.
A materials budget you can check
Two gallons of paint at $45 per gallon plus $35 in supplies produces a $125 example budget. Add two gallons of primer at $25 and it becomes $175. These are demonstration prices, not a current retailer survey.
Compare actual containers
A five-gallon bucket does not necessarily cost five times a one-gallon can. Open Advanced: paint groups to enter the actual price for each available container. Compare minimum quantity with lowest entered cost. The cost comparison is enabled only when every enabled size has a price; otherwise the budget uses entered prices where present and a clearly labelled unit-price fallback.
Keep labor separate
Ask whether a contractor’s rate is per floor area or per painted wall area, and whether it includes materials, preparation, trim, ceilings and all coats. Only enter a labor-only rate per painted surface area in this calculator. An all-in rate would count materials twice.
Questions for a written quote
- Which surfaces and repairs are included?
- Which product, finish and coat count are specified?
- Are protection, cleanup and access equipment included?
- Are tax, travel or disposal charges additional?
No project-duration estimate is given because preparation, drying time, access and crew size are not measured here.
Two different purchasing goals
Suppose you need 3.2 US gallons. You enter $15 for a 1-gallon can and $40 for a 5-gallon bucket. These are illustrative inputs, not retailer prices.
| Goal | Purchase | Cost | Excess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum quantity | 4 × 1 gal | $60 | 0.8 gal |
| Lowest entered cost | 1 × 5 gal | $40 | 1.8 gal |
With only some prices entered, there is no complete price comparison. Fill every enabled size or stay with minimum quantity and review the labelled unit-price estimates.
A metric budget worksheet
For 32 m², two coats, 10 m²/L and 10% extra: 7.04 L needed. If only 2.5 L tins are enabled, buy three. At an entered €24 per tin, paint costs €72; add €20 of supplies for €92 of materials. An entered labor-only range of €4–€6/m² adds €128–€192, giving €220–€284 before excluded charges.
In the painting cost calculator, record product prices first, open optional labor only if relevant, and compare its breakdown with the scope of a written quote. Mark tax, delivery, repairs and access equipment as included elsewhere or still to be priced.
