How many coats of paint should I plan for?
Compare coat counts while keeping primer and finish paint separate.

Start with the coating system required by your product label. Coat count depends on the product, existing colour, new colour, surface condition and application. The calculator starts at two finish coats as a planning assumption, not a guarantee of coverage.
Why one coat can be misleading
Hiding the previous colour and creating a uniform finished film are different goals. A wall can look covered in one light and patchy in another. Manufacturer instructions may specify a minimum coat count regardless of appearance.
Compare before committing
For 400 sq ft at 350 sq ft per gallon with 10% extra, one coat needs 1.26 gallons; two coats need 2.51; three need 3.77. Whole-gallon purchases become two, three and four gallons respectively. Open Compare coats & coverage in the calculator for your own surface.
Primer is its own material
Do not count primer as one of the finish coats. Enter its coverage and coat count separately. A paint-and-primer marketing description does not establish that a particular bare or stained substrate needs no primer; read that product’s instructions.
When to revisit the estimate
Do a small test section if the colour change is substantial or the substrate varies. Let it dry as instructed before judging coverage. Recalculate if the actual coverage or number of coats differs from your plan.
Different products in one room
If the wall product specifies two coats and the ceiling product one, add the ceiling separately and give it its own paint group. Override only its coat count; leave the other fields blank to inherit defaults. The comparison table deliberately applies one, two or three coats to every group, so it is a scenario rather than your selected mixed-coat plan.
Metric check: for 32 m² at 10 m²/L with 10% extra, one coat uses 3.52 L and two use 7.04 L. Changing coats doubles usage, but container purchasing may not double because whole containers are rounded separately. Compare your own coat counts.
